Us-Space-Galileo Image-Earth and Moon
This NASA composite file image shows the Earth and its Moon captured separately in 1992 by the Galileo spacecraft as it travelled on its way to explore the Jupiter system in 1995-97. Following eight years of exploring Jupiter and its moons, the spacecraft will plunge into Jupiters atmosphere 21 September, 2003, to eliminate any chance of an unwanted collision between the spacecraft and the moon Europa, which Galileo discovered is likely to have a subsurface ocean. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by NASA, captured in 1992 by the Galileo spacecraft, showcases a breathtaking view of our Earth and its Moon. The composite image beautifully depicts these celestial bodies separately, as seen from space. The Galileo spacecraft embarked on an incredible journey to explore the Jupiter system between 1995 and 1997 after capturing this remarkable snapshot. After eight years of studying Jupiter and its moons, it was decided that the spacecraft would be intentionally plunged into Jupiter's atmosphere on September 21st, 2003. This decision aimed to eliminate any potential collision between Galileo and Europa – one of Jupiter's moons. What makes this mission even more intriguing is that Galileo discovered evidence suggesting Europa might possess a subsurface ocean beneath its icy shell. This finding sparked immense curiosity among scientists about the possibility of extraterrestrial life within our own solar system. As we gaze at this square-shaped vertical print, we are reminded of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond our planet's boundaries. It serves as a testament to NASA's unwavering dedication to unraveling the mysteries of space and expanding our understanding of distant worlds. This AFP print not only captures an awe-inspiring moment but also symbolizes mankind's insatiable thirst for exploration and discovery in the vast cosmos surrounding us.
