EDITORS COMMENTS
Castle Henkenshage, Holland: A Symbol of Liberation and Friendship This evocative photograph captures the historic Castle Henkenshage in Holland, a site of significant importance during the Operation Market Garden mission in September 1944. The US 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Division, was tasked with capturing this position and successfully cleared the area on the first day of the operation, September 17, 1944. General Maxwell Taylor, commanding the 101st Airborne Division, established his headquarters within these castle walls, and it also served as a distribution center for food rationing coupons. The castle's entrance bears a poignant plaque, which reads, "This vital road junction was liberated by the 502nd PIR on 17 September 1944, with the assistance of the Dutch underground, and held against repeated enemy attacks. This plaque is in honor of the Screaming Eagles who gave their lives and as a token of esteem and friendship for the people of the Netherlands. Placed by Comrades of the 101st Airborne Division Association. 1969." The castle, with its rich history and strategic location, played a pivotal role in the Allied forces' efforts to secure a foothold in Holland during World War II. The plaque serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave soldiers of the 502nd PIR and the enduring bond between the Dutch people and their American allies. Date: 2001.
