EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Alexander II, the Tsar of Russia from 1855 until his untimely demise in 1881. Painted by renowned Russian artist Konstantin Makovsky, this artwork showcases the Tsar in all his regal glory and military might. Dressed in a resplendent military uniform, Alexander II exudes power and authority as he sits confidently on a chair. His piercing gaze reflects both wisdom and determination, hinting at the challenges he faced during his reign. In an unexpected twist that adds a touch of humanity to this depiction, Alexander II is shown indulging in a momentary respite - smoking a cigarette with one hand while affectionately resting the other on his loyal pet dog. This juxtaposition between strength and vulnerability offers us a glimpse into the complex nature of this historical figure. Tragically, just months after this portrait was completed, Alexander II's life was cut short by an assassination plot carried out in St Petersburg. This painting serves as a poignant reminder of not only his influential role as Tsar but also the fragility of human existence. Makovsky's masterful brushstrokes bring depth and realism to every detail captured within this artwork. Through its composition and symbolism, it immortalizes Alexander II as both an icon of Russian history and an individual whose life was tragically cut short.
