EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a poignant moment in the South Durham Coalfield, England. A group of hardworking miners or pitmen are depicted sitting around a brazier, patiently waiting to embark on their night shift underground. The man positioned at the center foreground is holding a Davy safety lamp, an essential tool for navigating the treacherous depths of the mine. Remarkably, he also indulges in a momentary respite by smoking his clay pipe. Intriguingly, at center right, we witness men standing inside the cage ready to be lowered into the abyss of the pit. Their expressions reveal both determination and perhaps even apprehension as they prepare themselves for another grueling day's labor. Meanwhile, on the right side of this powerful image, young boys responsible for tending to pit ponies engage in conversation amongst themselves. These children play an integral role in supporting mining operations by caring for these invaluable animals that assist with hauling coal from deep within. Originally published as an engraving in The Graphic (London) on February 4th, 1871, this historical snapshot provides us with a glimpse into Britain's industrial past and highlights the arduous conditions endured by those involved in coal mining during that era.
