EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment during the French Religious Wars of 1562-1598. The Siege of Chartres unfolds before our eyes, as Huguenot forces besiege the city in late February 1568. With their powerful artillery, they breach the north wall, determined to conquer this strategic stronghold. However, their subsequent assault on March 7th proves unsuccessful. In this image, we witness sappers diligently working to undermine a bastion that forms part of Chartres' formidable defenses. Their engineering skills are put to the test as they strive to weaken the city's fortifications and pave the way for victory. Meanwhile, troops armed with pikes and arquebuses stand ready for battle. The siege continues until March 23rd when peace is finally achieved through the signing of the Peace of Longjumeau. This engraving by Jacques Tortorel and Jean-Jacques Perrissin is part of their renowned series on the Huguenot Wars from around 1570. Through this historical snapshot, we gain insight into an era marked by religious conflict between Protestants and Catholics in France. It serves as a reminder of how warfare shaped not only political landscapes but also religious identities during this tumultuous period.
