EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Edward Jenner, an English physician whose groundbreaking work revolutionized medicine. Born in 1749 in Gloucestershire, Jenner dedicated his career to serving as a country doctor in his native region. It was through his astute observations and meticulous research that he made a remarkable discovery - immunity to smallpox could be obtained through cowpox. In 1796, Jenner embarked on a pioneering experiment by vaccinating young James Phipps multiple times with puss extracted from cowpox pustules found on a dairy maid. Following this immunization process, he fearlessly inoculated the boy with smallpox itself. Astonishingly, after experiencing mild illness for several days, James fully recovered. This momentous event marked the birth of vaccination and forever changed the course of preventive medicine. The photograph is taken from "The Gallery of Portraits" by Charles Knight published in London in 1837, immortalizing Jenner's significant contribution to public health. Edward Jenner's innovative approach laid the foundation for modern immunization practices and played a pivotal role in combating epidemics worldwide. His tireless efforts continue to save countless lives even today
