EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Richard I, Coeur de Lion, during the Battle of Arsuf in 1191. Richard, also known as Richard the Lionheart, was the son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine and served as the second Angevin (Plantagenet) king of England from 1189 to 1199. This wood engraving, created around 1880, beautifully captures a pivotal moment in history. During the Third Crusade (1189-1192), Richard led the Christian crusaders against Saladin, a prominent Muslim leader. After successfully capturing Acre, Richard marched his army of 30,000 towards Jaffa. Along their journey, they encountered fierce resistance from Saracen forces at Arsuf which lay approximately 30 miles away from Jaffa. Richard's strategic brilliance prevailed as he defeated these formidable opponents on his path to reclaiming holy lands for Christianity. His unwavering determination and leadership skills were instrumental in rallying his troops against Saladin's forces. This image not only portrays an important battle but also symbolizes religious conflict and political power struggles that defined this era. It serves as a reminder of Richard's valorous efforts to uphold English royalty while fighting for religious freedom during one of history's most significant conflicts - The Crusades
