A Dress Rehearsal, 1868. Artist: John Tenniel
A Dress Rehearsal, 1868. The campaigning for the General Election of 1868 was well under way, and it was apparent that the Liberal party were leading the race. It was being suggested that the former Radical, John Bright, would be in line for a key government post, should the Liberal party indeed win power. Here, then, Punch depicts that former radical trying on his new outfit in anticipation of office. In fact, the Liberal Party did win office, and John Bright did indeed become a cabinet minister and privy councillor in December 1868. From Punch, or the London Charivari, September 12, 1868

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "A Dress Rehearsal, 1868" artist John Tenniel takes us back to a significant moment in British political history. The year was 1868, and the Liberal party was gaining momentum in the General Election campaign. As the party's victory seemed likely, speculations arose about John Bright, a former Radical, assuming a prominent government position. Tenniel's illustration portrays Bright eagerly trying on his new outfit in anticipation of his potential role in office. With great attention to detail, we see him standing before a mirror adorned with an elegant Victorian dressing table. His reflection reveals a man ready for action – donning a stylish jacket, sideburns neatly trimmed and hat cocked at just the right angle. The print captures both the excitement surrounding politics and the fashion trends of that era. It symbolizes not only Bright's personal journey but also represents larger themes of power dynamics and societal change during this pivotal time in history. As fate would have it, the Liberal Party did emerge victorious in December 1868, leading to Bright's appointment as cabinet minister and privy councillor. This satirical engraving from Punch magazine serves as both an amusing caricature and an insightful commentary on British politics of the nineteenth century. With its black-and-white monochrome style adding depth to every line drawn by Tenniel's skilled hand, this historical artwork transports viewers back to witness one man's transformation within a broader political landscape.
