BAL780526 Swan Lake, Mariinsky Theatre, 1895 (b/w photo) by Russian Photographer, (19th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Swan Lake ballet, Op. 20, by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, was composed in 1875a'1876. The scenario, initially in four acts, was fashioned from Russian folk tales and tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerers curse. The choreographer of the original production was Julius Reisinger. The ballet was premiered by the Bolshoi Ballet on 4 March 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Although it is presented in many different versions, most ballet companies base their stagings both choreographically and musically on the 1895 revival of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, first staged for the Imperial Ballet on 15 January 1895, at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. ); Russian, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the enchanting world of Swan Lake, one of the most beloved ballets in history. Captured by a Russian photographer in the 19th century, this image showcases a scene from the iconic Mariinsky Theatre production in 1895. Swan Lake, composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky between 1875 and 1876, tells the tragic tale of Odette, a princess who is transformed into a swan by an evil sorcerer's curse. The original choreography was created by Julius Reisinger and premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow on March 4,1877. However, it was the revival staged by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov that truly solidified Swan Lake's place as a masterpiece. Their version debuted on January 15,1895 at St. Petersburg's prestigious Mariinsky Theatre – an event that forever changed ballet history. In this mesmerizing photograph, we catch a glimpse of dancers gracefully gliding across the stage with ethereal swan-like movements. The monochromatic palette adds depth and timelessness to their performance. As we admire this historic snapshot from behind-the-scenes of Swan Lake's illustrious past, we are reminded of its enduring legacy within the world of dance. This image serves as both a testament to its timeless beauty and an invitation for us to immerse ourselves in its magical realm once again.
