EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph, titled "Attention! Company!", is a powerful recruiting broadside for the New York 156th Infantry in 1862. Created by an anonymous American School artist from the 19th century, this print measures 52.4x35.9 cm and belongs to the Gilder Lehrman Collection in New York. The artwork features a majestic eagle clutching a scroll that boldly declares, "The Union must be preserved". This patriotic symbol serves as a call to arms, urging recruits to join Captain P. H. Decker's company under Colonel Erastus Cooke's regiment. The headquarters of this esteemed regiment can be found at the Ulster County House in Kingston. Printed by Hommels Power Press Printing in Kingston itself, this historic document showcases Lieutenant Holmes as the recruiting officer responsible for spreading awareness about this noble cause. Although his first name remains unknown, his dedication shines through as he rallies individuals to defend their nation during these tumultuous times. Colonel Erastus Cooke received authorization on August 23rd, 1862 to form this remarkable regiment within the State's then-10th Senatorial District. Mustered into service on November 17th of that same year, these brave soldiers committed themselves to three years of loyal service under the United States Army. Despite minor damage repaired over time and previous folding into quarters, this rare artifact stands as a testament to America's rich history and unwavering spirit during one of its most challenging periods - the Civil War era.
