Pattern 1796 Heavy Dragoon Carbine
5925765 Pattern 1796 Heavy Dragoon Carbine by British School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Pattern 1796 Heavy Dragoon Carbine.
In addition to various types of swords the cavalry was armed with pistols and carbines. As with swords, 1796 saw the introduction of several new standard firearms.
Loading and firing these muzzle-loading weapons on horseback required considerable skill and the sword remained the most popular cavalry arm during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.
This carbine of 0.76 inch calibre was shorter than the infantry musket, which made it easier to use when mounted. It is fitted with a sling bar and ring enabling the cavalryman to wear the carbine while leaving both hands free. The carbine then hung butt down, to make loading easier. The weapons could be fitted with a bayonet for close quarter contact.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Pattern 1796 Heavy Dragoon Carbine, a significant weapon used by the British cavalry during the 19th century. The National Army Museum in London proudly displays this historical artifact, shedding light on the weaponry employed by soldiers of that era. The introduction of various standard firearms in 1796 revolutionized the cavalry's arsenal, alongside their traditional swords. However, despite these advancements, swords remained highly favored among cavalrymen throughout the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. With its shorter length compared to infantry muskets, this carbine proved to be more manageable for mounted troops. Equipped with a sling bar and ring, it allowed cavalrymen to wear it while keeping both hands free for other tasks. The unique hanging position of the carbine facilitated easier loading when needed. Measuring at 0.76 inches in caliber, this formidable weapon could also be fitted with a bayonet for close-quarter combat situations. Its versatility made it an essential tool for dragoons engaging in battle. Through this remarkable image captured by Bridgeman Images from Fine Art Finder, viewers are transported back in time to witness not only the evolution of military technology but also gain insight into the skill and expertise required to handle such muzzle-loading weapons on horseback.
