EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Woman of France from the 16th century, as depicted in an engraving by Abraham Bosse. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring this historical figure to life, allowing us to catch a glimpse of the fashion and style of that era. The handcolored illustration was skillfully executed by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard, who collaborated with lithographers A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie to create this stunning piece of art. Published in Paris in 1867 as part of Georges Duplessis' "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), this print is a valuable contribution to our understanding of French fashion history. Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard himself was a renowned artist known for his talent as both a book illustrator and interior designer for public buildings and churches. His attention to detail is evident in every brushstroke used to colorize this engraving. Georges Duplessis, curator at the Bibliotheque nationale during that time period, curated an impressive collection on historical costumes spanning several centuries. This publication served as a continuation of Camille Bonnard and Paul Mercuri's earlier series on costumes from the 12th to the 15th centuries. This print not only captures the beauty and elegance of French fashion but also serves as an important historical document preserving the styles worn by women during one particular moment in time - offering us insight into their lives through clothing choices.
