Madonna and Child, c. 1446-47 (tempera & gold on panel)
2635026 Madonna and Child, c.1446-47 (tempera & gold on panel) by Lippi, Fra Filippo (c.1406-69); 115.7x73.4 cm; Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, USA; (add.info.: This tender devotional image of the Madonna and Child before a golden curtain still has its original frame, the classical shapes of which demonstrate the Renaissance fascination with antiquity. The frame looks like an architectural opening that has cut off the top of the Virgins halo. Inscribed along its base in Latin are the words spoken to Mary by the archangel Gabriel, which were also a popular prayer: " Hail Mary full of grace. The Lord is with thee." The star on the Virgins blue robe alludes to her epithet of Stella maris, the Star of the Sea. Filippo Lippi, a Carmelite friar, was one of the leading painters of 15th-century Florence. He was famous for his innovative naturalism and had many pupils, the most important of whom was Sandro Botticelli (1444/45-1510). EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork of Fra Filippo Lippi, a renowned painter from 15th-century Florence. Titled "Madonna and Child" this tempera and gold on panel masterpiece is a tender devotional image that continues to captivate viewers with its timeless beauty. The painting depicts the Madonna and Child standing before a resplendent golden curtain. The original frame adds to the allure of the piece, featuring classical shapes that reflect the Renaissance's fascination with antiquity. Interestingly, the frame appears as an architectural opening, cutting off the top of the Virgin's halo. Inscribed along the base in Latin are words spoken by Archangel Gabriel to Mary: "Hail Mary full of grace. The Lord is with thee". These words were also a popular prayer during that time, adding a spiritual dimension to this already divine scene. Notably, there is a star adorning the Virgin's blue robe, symbolizing her epithet as Stella maris or Star of the Sea. This detail further enhances her celestial presence within this sacred composition. Filippo Lippi's naturalistic approach to painting revolutionized art during his era. As a Carmelite friar, he was highly esteemed for his innovative techniques and had numerous talented pupils under his tutelage - most notably Sandro Botticelli. With its rich history and profound symbolism, this remarkable artwork continues to inspire awe and admiration among art enthusiasts worldwide.
