Amor Caritas, modeled 1898, cast after 1898 (bronze)

491099 Amor Caritas, modeled 1898, cast after 1898 (bronze) by Saint-Gaudens, Augustus (1848-1907); h:101.00 w:45.20 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: This bronze relief-a smaller version of the 8x4-foot original now in the Musee d Orsay, Paris-represents the culmination of a theme that Augustus Saint-Gaudens first used for the funerary angel figures on the 1880 family tomb of former New York governor Edwin D. Morgan. The finely pleated tunic is featured in all renderings of this figure as Saint-Gaudens tinkered with the decorative possibilities of the drapery. Here, he further contributed to the works naturalism and symbolism by adorning her head and waist with a garland of passionflowers native to America, Passiflora coerulea. The different symbols of Christs Passion are commonly recognized in the structure of this flower. Amor Caritas won the grand prize in the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900, establishing Saint-Gaudens as one of the pre-eminent American sculptors of the day. The calm strength and independence evident in the figures face seem to represent Saint-Gaudenss feminine ideal. Critics noted that the reliefs " austere grace" marked it as a quintessential Saint-Gaudens figure and an excellent example of the American Rennaissance.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite bronze relief sculpture titled "Amor Caritas" created by renowned American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1898. The artwork, measuring 101.00 cm in height and 45.20 cm in width, is housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. Saint-Gaudens initially explored the theme of love and charity with his funerary angel figures on a family tomb in 1880. This smaller version of his original masterpiece, now displayed at the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, represents the culmination of his artistic exploration. The finely pleated tunic featured on this figure demonstrates Saint-Gaudens's experimentation with decorative possibilities. To enhance both naturalism and symbolism within the piece, Saint-Gaudens adorned Amor Caritas's head and waist with a garland made from passionflowers native to America. These flowers hold various symbols associated with Christ's Passion. The grand prize awarded to Amor Caritas at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900 solidified Saint-Gaudens's position as one of America's pre-eminent sculptors during that era. The figure exudes calm strength and independence through its facial expression, embodying Saint-Gaudens's idealized feminine form. Critics praised this relief for its austere grace, considering it quintessential to Saint-Gaudens's style while exemplifying the American Renaissance movement. The lower left corner bears Augustus Saint-Gauden’s signature along with a date inscription from MDCCCXCVII (1897). Additionally, "AMOR CARITAS" is inscribed on a table within the artwork itself. This stunning photograph was generously gifted to the Dorothy Burnham Everett Memorial Collection by Mrs. Henry A. Everett and is part of Bridgeman Images' extensive collection showcasing artworks no longer under copyright restrictions or intended for commercial use.
