EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite beauty of the white-bellied Hummingbird, accompanied by its vibrant green and blue counterpart. The artwork, a coloured engraving created by George Edwards in the 18th century, is now part of a private collection. Originally engraved by Edwards for his renowned works on uncommon birds, this particular print was re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, a German artist and art dealer from Nuremberg. Seligmann combined Edwards' plates with illustrations from Catesby's "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands" translating names into German and adding additional figures and plants not present in the original artworks. The image captures these delicate creatures in remarkable detail - their iridescent feathers shimmering under sunlight as they hover mid-air. The white-bellied Hummingbird stands out with its pristine plumage contrasting against the vivid greens and blues of its companion. As we gaze upon this enchanting scene, we are reminded of nature's boundless wonders. This print serves as a testament to both artistic skill and scientific exploration during an era when natural history illustrations were highly sought after. It allows us to appreciate these tiny avian marvels up close while also celebrating the collaborative efforts that brought together two great minds in ornithology - George Edwards and Michael Seligmann.
