EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite embroidery of Elizabethan Chatsworth, dating back to the late 16th century. Originally created as a cushion panel, this rare and significant textile piece measures 58x106 cm and is part of The Devonshire Collections at Chatsworth. The embroidery depicts the west elevation of Chatsworth, with its majestic castle-like structure adorned with intricate details. The central arched entrance reveals a charming inner courtyard featuring a fountain and cove. Above the windows on the entrance are two shields, one bearing the Cavendish stags and the other displaying the Hardwick arms. A female statue stands proudly above them. The attention to detail in this artwork is astounding - each of the fifty-three latticed windows is meticulously stitched in pale blue silks within dark brown frames. Circular grotesque medallions adorn both the entrance tower and pediments of larger gallery windows on each side. Other delightful elements include yellow tent-stitched chimneys emitting curls of embroidered smoke, black bees buzzing around, giant butterflies fluttering through the sky, and a large smiling sunburst at its center. The terrace in front features a black-and-white tiled path and pedimented walls while green fields with blooming flowers can be glimpsed on either side. Enclosing this magnificent scene are blue serpents intertwined with pink dog rose medallions along with Hardwick coats of arms adorning both upper and lower borders. Displayed within an elaborate frame carved with putti figures, this embroidery truly captures the essence of Elizabethan craftsmanship at its finest.
