997102 Charles VI and Henry V signing the Treaty of Troyes in 1420, illustration from the Chroniques de Monstrelet (vellum) by French School, (15th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Enguerrand de Monstrelet (c. 1400 - 20 July 1453), was a French chronicler. Little is known about Monstrelet except that he was present, not at the capture of Joan of Arc, but at her subsequent interrogation with Philip the Good, duke of Burgundy. Continuing the work of Froissart, Monstrelet wrote a Chronique, which extends to two books and covers the period between 1400 and 1444. The Treaty of Troyes was an agreement that Henry V of England and his heirs would inherit the throne of France upon the death of King Charles VI of France. It was signed in the French city of Troyes on 21 May 1420 in the aftermath of Henrys successful military campaign in France. It forms a part of the backdrop of the latter phase of the Hundred Years War, in which various English kings tried to establish their claims to the French throne.); © Tallandier

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant historical moment - the signing of the Treaty of Troyes in 1420. The illustration, taken from the Chroniques de Monstrelet, showcases Charles VI and Henry V engaged in this pivotal agreement. Painted on vellum by an anonymous French artist from the 15th century, it now resides in a private collection. Enguerrand de Monstrelet, a renowned French chronicler, documented this event as part of his extensive work. Although little is known about him personally, his chronicle covers the period between 1400 and 1444 and provides valuable insights into this era. The Treaty of Troyes marked an important turning point during the Hundred Years War. It solidified Henry V's claim to inherit the throne of France upon King Charles VI's death. Signed after Henry's successful military campaign in France, it became a crucial backdrop for subsequent English attempts to establish their authority over France. This exquisite print not only serves as a visual representation but also offers us a glimpse into history itself. It reminds us of the intricate political alliances and power struggles that defined medieval Europe. As we admire this artwork today, let us reflect on how these events shaped our world and appreciate those who have preserved them for future generations to learn from and cherish.
