EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph captures the regal presence of Albert I, King of the Belgians, during the late 19th to early 20th century. As the third king of Belgium, Albert succeeded his uncle Leopold II in 1909 and left an indelible mark on his nation's history. In this portrait, King Albert stands tall and dignified in his military uniform, exuding authority as a commander-in-chief. The kepi atop his head symbolizes his role as a leader during times of war. It was during World War I that Albert displayed immense bravery by personally taking command of Belgium's armed forces when they were invaded by the Germans. The print also alludes to the deep admiration and respect that Albert garnered from his subjects. After leading Belgium through such tumultuous times, he received a hero's welcome upon returning to Brussels at the end of the war. Tragically, this beloved monarch met an untimely demise in 1934 due to a climbing accident in the Ardennes. His passing deeply mourned by those he ruled over. This lithograph serves as both a historical artifact and a testament to King Albert I's significance within Belgian history. It encapsulates not only his role as a sovereign but also highlights his dedication towards protecting and serving his countrymen during one of its most challenging periods - World War I.
