Andreas Vesalius, 16th century Flemish anatomist, c1789-c1798

Andreas Vesalius, 16th century Flemish anatomist, c1789-c1798. Vesalius (1514-1564) great work on anatomy De Humani Corporis Fabrica (On the Structure of the Human Body) (1543) was a landmark, with accurate depictions of parts of the body, including the nervous system. Vesalius based his work on dissection and personal observation, disproving the belief that because, in Genesis, God created Eve from Adams rib, men had one less rib than women. He contradicted Aristotles teaching that the heart is the seat of the emotions, replacing it with the brain and the nervous system. From Essays in Physiognomy by JK Lavater. (London, 1789-1798)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the portrait of Andreas Vesalius, a 16th-century Flemish anatomist. Known for his groundbreaking work on anatomy, Vesalius's book De Humani Corporis Fabrica (On the Structure of the Human Body) revolutionized our understanding of the human body. Created between 1789 and 1798 by Johann Kaspar Lavater, this engraving showcases Vesalius's contribution to science. In this image, Vesalius is depicted with a beard that adds an air of wisdom and authority to his appearance. His intense gaze reflects his dedication and passion for unraveling the mysteries of human anatomy. As a pioneer in his field, he relied on dissection and personal observation to challenge long-held beliefs about the human body. Vesalius's meticulous depictions in De Humani Corporis Fabrica shattered misconceptions prevalent at that time. He disproved the notion that men had one less rib than women by accurately illustrating their skeletal structure. Additionally, he rejected Aristotle's belief that emotions resided in the heart, replacing it with scientific evidence pointing towards the brain and nervous system. This print serves as a testament to Vesalius's invaluable contributions to medical science during the Renaissance period. It reminds us of his tireless pursuit of knowledge and commitment to challenging established dogmas through empirical research.
