Depicting a significant moment in the War of the Spanish Succession, this historic battle saw British and allied forces triumph over the French and Bavarians. The Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy led their army to victory, resulting in 30,000 casualties for the French, including over 3,000 horsemen who tragically drowned while attempting to escape across the River Danube. In recognition of his remarkable leadership and success on behalf of Britain, Queen Anne bestowed upon Marlborough the Woodstock estate in Oxfordshire. This lithograph from Queen Anne showcases her gratitude towards Marlborough for his pivotal role in securing this monumental win. The image portrays soldiers engaged in fierce combat on horseback amidst a chaotic battlefield. The commander's staff can be seen leading troops with unwavering determination. As smoke billows around them and horses charge forward fearlessly into battle, one cannot help but feel captivated by the intensity captured within this monochrome scene.
