EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the esteemed figure of Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield, who served as Prime Minister of Britain in 1881. A prominent statesman and a member of the Conservative Party, Disraeli held the prestigious position twice during his career - first in 1868 and then again between 1874 and 1880. Known for his remarkable achievements, Disraeli played a pivotal role in expanding the British Empire under his leadership. In an unprecedented move, he bestowed upon Queen Victoria the title Empress of India in 1876. This act not only solidified Britain's influence but also showcased Disraeli's political acumen. Beyond politics, this portrait reveals more about the man behind the office. Born into a Jewish family, Disraeli embraced his religious heritage throughout his life. His faith was an integral part of his identity and shaped both his personal beliefs and political ideology. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield for "Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits" this image offers us a glimpse into Victorian England's elite circles. The monochrome aesthetic adds to its timeless appeal while capturing every detail with precision. As we gaze at this photograph today, we are reminded not only of Benjamin Disraeli's significant contributions to British history but also how individuals can transcend societal barriers through their determination and intellect.
