The British Mail Steam-Ship "Asia", 1850. Creator: Smyth. The British Mail Steam-Ship "Asia", 1850. Creator: Smyth

The British Mail Steam-Ship "Asia", 1850. The Asia was built by Messrs. Steele, of Greenock. The engines and boilers were furnished by Mr. Robert Napier, of the same town, who has supplied the machinery for all the Cunard line...From the time of the first sole-plate of the engine being laid, till the whole machinery and boilers were completely fitted up, only eight weeks elapsed; which, considering their enormous size and weight, is a feat of unexampled occurrence...The Asia is propelled by two splendidly-finished engines of 400-horse power each, which are constructed in the most substantial manner possible. The steam is supplied by four boilers, any number of which can be worked separately, if necessary; and although any one should be disabled, or require cleaning, no inconvenience will be thereby occasioned'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the British Mail Steam-Ship Asia, created by the acclaimed artist Smyth in 1850. The Asia was a groundbreaking achievement in maritime engineering, built by Messrs. Steele in Greenock, Scotland. The engines and boilers were supplied by the esteemed Robert Napier, a local innovator who had previously outfitted the entire Cunard line. The remarkable feat of constructing this colossal vessel was accomplished in just eight weeks, an unprecedented accomplishment for its size and weight. Powered by two 400-horsepower engines, each meticulously crafted, the Asia was propelled through the water with unparalleled efficiency. Four boilers supplied the steam, allowing for uninterrupted operation even if one were to be disabled or require cleaning. The Asia represented the pinnacle of 19th-century industrial innovation, revolutionizing transatlantic communication and transportation. This engraving, originally published in the Illustrated London News, showcases the ship's impressive features, including its towering funnel and paddle wheels. The vessel's sleek design and advanced technology epitomized the spirit of progress during the Victorian era, making it a testament to the ingenuity and ambition of the age.
