The services rendered by Captain Hall on board this vessel in the China seas are matter of notoriety, and...obtained for him in the Navy the name of "Nemesis Hall"...At the commencement of the present [Crimean] war, Capt. Hall commissioned the Hecla steam-sloop, and joined the Baltic Fleet...The iron bilge-tanks, now in use in the Royal Navy, and the patent anchor bearing his name, are of his invention...In 1847 Captain Hall was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society...The accompanying Portrait is a correct likeness of Captain W.
