Colosseum print - north view, 1844. Creator: Ebenezer Landells
Colosseum print - north view, 1844. Panorama of London, one of a series made from daguerreotypes by Antoine Claudet, sketched by Henry Anelay and engraved by Ebenezer Landells. The daguerreotype images were taken from the top of York Column: The picture was not one complete whole, as it now appears upon the paper, but was divided upon a very great number of small silver plates. These had to be copied, and arranged each in its exact position, any small deficiences being filled in from nature. This labour required a talented artist, and occupied at the top of the column during many days, the pencil of Mr. H. Anelay...the Colosseum Print required upwards of sixty distinct blocks, to be consolidated into one perfect surface, without line, speck or flaw. This was done by Mr. Wells...the drawing upon the wood, a task performed by Mr. Sargeant. From a supplement to the " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print of the Colosseum in London offers a glimpse into the city's rich history. Created in 1844 by Ebenezer Landells, this north view of the iconic landmark showcases the intricate details and grandeur of its architecture. The process behind this remarkable print was no small feat. The original daguerreotype images were taken from atop York Column, capturing different sections of the Colosseum on multiple small silver plates. These plates had to be meticulously copied and arranged to create one cohesive image, with any imperfections filled in from nature itself. The task fell upon talented artists such as Henry Anelay, who spent countless days at the top of the column sketching each section with precision. Mr. Wells then consolidated over sixty distinct blocks into one flawless surface without any lines or flaws. Finally, Mr. Sargeant skillfully transferred these drawings onto wood for engraving. The result is a stunning panorama that transports us back to Victorian-era London, showcasing not only the architectural beauty but also providing insight into town planning during that time period. This print serves as a testament to both artistic talent and technological innovation in capturing historical landmarks like the Colosseum for posterity. It allows us to appreciate how far we have come while reminding us of our connection to our past and heritage.
