Dr. Wilson and Lieut. Bowers Reading The Ramp Thermometer, c1911, (1913). Artist
Dr. Wilson and Lieut. Bowers Reading The Ramp Thermometer in the Winter Night, - 40° Fahr. (A flashlight photograph), c1911, (1913). Dr Edward Wilson (1872-1912) and Lieutenant Henry Birdie Bowers (1883-1912) died with Scott on the way back from the South Pole. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
The photograph captures a poignant moment in history, showcasing Dr. Edward Wilson and Lieutenant Henry Bowers reading the ramp thermometer in the winter night of 1911. The image, taken with a flashlight, depicts the harsh conditions faced by these brave explorers during their ill-fated journey to the South Pole. Dr. Wilson and Lt. Bowers were part of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova Expedition, which aimed to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. This final expedition included a diverse team of scientists and experts who sought to continue important scientific work in Antarctica. Tragically, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912, Scott and his team discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them by a month. Stranded by blizzards and dwindling supplies, Scott's group perished at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later, revealing their heroic struggle against nature's forces until their last breaths. This photograph serves as a haunting reminder of their sacrifice and determination amidst extreme adversity. Preserved within "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume I (published by Smith Elder & Co. , London in 1913), this print stands as an enduring testament to the courage displayed by Dr. Wilson, Lt. Bowers, Captain Lawrence Oates, Petty Officer Edgar Evans, and Captain Scott himself - all valiant souls who ventured into uncharted territory for science and exploration but tragically never returned home.
