EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a 19th century print of Empress Elisabeth Amelia Eugenia of Austria, also known as Sissi, taken from the "Cassells Illustrated Family Paper; London Weekly" published between December 31, 1853 and December 30, 1854. The identity of the creator of this engraving remains unknown. Elisabeth, born as Duchess Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie of Bavaria, was the Empress Consort of Austria-Hungary, married to Emperor Franz Joseph I. In this portrait, she is depicted wearing a elegant high-necked dress with long sleeves, adorned with intricate lace and ribbons. The ribbon in her hair matches the one on her dress, adding a touch of harmony to her appearance. Elisabeth was known for her beauty, intelligence, and grace, and her fashion sense was influential during her time. Her style, which combined traditional Austrian and modern European trends, set new standards for the imperial court. The print shows Elisabeth in a contemplative pose, gazing off into the distance. Her expression suggests a deep thoughtfulness, adding to her mystique and allure. The location of the portrait is not clear, but it is believed to have been taken during her time in Austria after her marriage to Franz Joseph in 1854. Empress Elisabeth's life was marked by tragedy and scandal, but her legacy as a fashion icon and a symbol of Austrian culture endures to this day. This beautiful print is a testament to her timeless beauty and the elegance of the 19th century.
