Esther, 19th century. Artist: Hermann Anschutz

Esther, 19th century. Esther (born Hadassah), was a woman in the Hebrew Bible, the queen of Ahasuerus and the heroine of the Biblical Book of Esther which is named after her. As a result of Esthers intervention and influence, Persian Jews lived in Persia (modern Iran) for 2400 years thereafter. Esthers husband Ahasuerus followed in the footsteps of his maternal grandfather, Cyrus the Great, in showing mercy to the Jews of Persia: Cyrus had decreed an end to the Babylonian captivity of the Jews upon his conquest of Babylon in 527 BC. Found in the collection of the State A Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the portrait of Esther, a remarkable woman from the 19th century. Created by the talented artist Hermann Anschutz, this artwork beautifully captures her grace and strength. Esther, originally named Hadassah, holds great significance in the Hebrew Bible as she was not only the queen of Ahasuerus but also a courageous heroine in the Biblical Book of Esther. Her intervention and influence played a pivotal role in ensuring that Persian Jews could continue living in Persia (modern-day Iran) for an astonishing 2400 years thereafter. It is worth noting that Esthers' husband Ahasuerus followed his maternal grandfather's footsteps - Cyrus the Great - who had shown mercy to Jews upon conquering Babylon in 527 BC, thus ending their captivity there. Currently housed at The State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, this painting represents more than just art; it symbolizes religious history and cultural heritage. With its vibrant colors and intricate details depicting Esthers' costume and headdress, this masterpiece serves as a testament to both German artistic talent and Jewish identity. As you admire this stunning portrayal of Esther through oil on canvas technique, take a moment to appreciate how one woman's bravery can shape generations to come. Let us cherish her legacy as we delve into history through fine art images like these created by Hermann Anschutz.
