The French launch their offensive, 2nd Battle of Champagne, France, 25 September 1915

The French launch their offensive, 2nd Battle of Champagne, France, 25 September 1915. The French attack was initially successful, penetrating 3 kilometres through the German lines. The Germans counter-attacked however, and by the time the offensive was called off in early November the French were back in their original positions with 145, 000 casualties. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in history - the French launch of their offensive during the 2nd Battle of Champagne on September 25,1915. The image depicts the intensity and chaos of warfare as French soldiers bravely charge forward, determined to break through German lines. Initially, the French attack proves successful, with troops penetrating an impressive three kilometers into enemy territory. However, the tides quickly turn as the Germans fiercely counter-attack. By early November, when the offensive is finally called off, the French find themselves back in their original positions but at a devastating cost - a staggering 145,000 casualties. Not only did this battle result in immense human loss for France, but it also had far-reaching consequences. The diversion of artillery away from Verdun during this offensive encouraged the Germans to launch their own attack there early in the following year. In this photograph's monochrome depiction lies a powerful reminder of sacrifice and bravery exhibited by these men who fought valiantly for their country amidst unimaginable conditions. It serves as a testament to both the horrors and heroism witnessed on that fateful day along France's Western Front during World War I.
