Hot Pies!, 1879. Artist: Joseph Swain
Hot Pies!, 1879. A group of politicians are devouring pies representing countries. Lord Lytton, the viceroy of India, dressed as a waiter, brings another pie, to which Disraeli ( Master Benjamin ), seated at far right, replies: Thank you, no more at present! We ve quite as much as we can manage, thank you!. The new king of Burma was believed to be considering war against British subjects in lower Burma and the British military in India had to send reinforcements. With their troubles in Turkey, Afghanistan and other areas, the British government did not want another pie to have to deal with. From Punch, or the London Charivari, April 5, 1879

Hot Pies!, 1879 - A Political Feast
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print, created by Joseph Swain and featuring the renowned politicians Benjamin Disraeli and Lord Lytton, we are transported back to the political climate of 19th century Britain. The scene unfolds with a group of influential statesmen gathered around a table, their attention fixated on an array of pies representing different countries. Dressed as a waiter, Lord Lytton approaches the table with yet another pie in hand. Disraeli, seated at the far right, declines politely but humorously exclaims that they have quite enough on their plates already. This witty exchange captures the essence of British foreign policy during that era - burdened by conflicts in Turkey, Afghanistan, and other regions; they were not eager for any additional challenges. The print serves as both satire and commentary on imperialism and colonialism prevalent during this time period. It highlights the insatiable greed for power exhibited by these politicians who voraciously consume pies symbolizing nations under their control. Swain's skillful engraving technique brings out every detail in black and white monochrome. The expressions on each politician's face reveal their characters - from Disraeli's bearded countenance to Lord Lytton's dignified presence. This historic image provides us with a glimpse into an era where politics was served alongside hot pies. It reminds us of how foreign policies were shaped through gluttonous appetites for dominance while shedding light on the complex dynamics between nations striving to maintain control over vast territories across the globe.
