Ignatius of Loyola, Superior General of the Society of Jesus. Artist: W Holl

Ignatius of Loyola, Superior General of the Society of Jesus. Inigo Lopez de Loyola (1491-1556) founded the Society of Jesus together with 6 others at St Marys Church, Montmartre, Paris, in 1534. The society, which came to be known as the Jesuits, was established with the mission to enter upon hospital and missionary work in Jerusalem, or to go without questioning wherever the pope might direct. The Society of Jesus gained papal approval in 1540, and went on to become a highly organised teaching and missionary society which was at the forefront of the Counter-Reformation. St Ignatius was canonised in 1622

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the powerful presence of Ignatius of Loyola, the Superior General of the Society of Jesus. Created by W Holl, this engraving showcases St Ignatius in his distinctive attire, wearing a hat that symbolizes his position as a religious leader. Ignatius of Loyola was not only a founder but also an influential figure in Catholicism during the 16th century. Together with six others, he established the Society of Jesus at St Mary's Church in Montmartre, Paris in 1534. This society later became known as the Jesuits and played a significant role in hospital work and missionary activities. The Jesuits gained papal approval in 1540 under Ignatius' leadership and emerged as an organized teaching and missionary society at the forefront of the Counter-Reformation movement. Their dedication to spreading Christianity wherever directed by the pope is evident through their extensive work across different countries. St Ignatius' canonization took place in 1622, recognizing his immense contributions to religion and spirituality. This print serves as a reminder of his enduring legacy within Roman Catholicism. W Holl's artistic rendition beautifully portrays St Ignatius' devoutness and determination to serve God through his religious order. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth to this historical depiction while emphasizing its timeless significance.
