Ludlow Castle, Shropshire, 1924-1926. Artist: Louis Burleigh Bruhl
Ludlow Castle, Shropshire, 1924-1926. The building of Ludlow Castle was begun in the late 11th century by Roger de Lacy, one of the Marcher Lords on the border with Wales. In the early 14th century it was extended by Roger Mortimer, the powerful baron who led the rebellion that overthrew Edward II. The castle was an important base during the Wars of the Roses, and by the late 15th century had become the seat of government of Wales and the Border Counties. Ludlow avoided damage in the English Civil War, but fell into decline after its administrative functions were moved to London in the late 17th century. A print from Hutchinsons Britain Beautiful, edited by Walter Hutchinson, Volume 4, 1924-1926

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Ludlow Castle, located in Shropshire, England, during the years 1924-1926. The castle's construction began in the late 11th century under Roger de Lacy, a prominent Marcher Lord on the Welsh border. Over time, it was expanded by Roger Mortimer, a powerful baron who played a pivotal role in overthrowing Edward II during the early 14th century. As history unfolded, Ludlow Castle became an essential stronghold during the Wars of the Roses and eventually served as the seat of government for Wales and the Border Counties. Despite avoiding damage during the English Civil War, Ludlow Castle gradually declined after its administrative functions were relocated to London in the late 17th century. This stunning artwork by Louis Burleigh Bruhl captures not only its architectural beauty but also reflects upon its historical significance. The image portrays a picturesque landscape with lush greenery surrounding this medieval fortress. A river named Teme flows peacefully nearby while offering a mesmerizing reflection of both nature and ruins alike. Bruhl's masterful use of color brings out every intricate detail of this fortification from centuries past. As we gaze upon this print from Hutchinsons Britain Beautiful edited by Walter Hutchinson (Volume 4), we are transported back to an era when castles stood tall as symbols of power and resilience against adversity. It serves as a reminder that even though time may have weathered their walls, these structures continue to inspire awe and fascination today.
