EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Marshal Ney, a renowned French soldier who played a significant role in the Napoleonic Wars during the 19th century. Created by artist Paul Girardet, this engraving showcases Ney's commanding presence and military uniform with meticulous detail. Michel Ney, also known as Prince de la Moskowa and Duke of Elchingen, rose to prominence when he was appointed as a Marshal of France in 1804. Throughout his career, he led several crucial battles including Friedland, Borodino, Smolensk, and Waterloo. His unwavering loyalty to Napoleon earned him great respect among his troops. In this particular image, we witness Ney amidst wintry conditions symbolizing the harsh realities faced by soldiers during war. The snow-covered landscape serves as a backdrop for his resolute expression that reflects both determination and hardship. Ney's most notable contribution came during Napoleon's retreat from Moscow where he commanded the rearguard with remarkable bravery. However, after Paris capitulated to enemy forces in 1815, Ney was accused of treason and subsequently executed by firing squad. Paul Girardet skillfully captures not only Michel Ney's physical appearance but also conveys the weighty responsibilities carried by military personnel during times of conflict. This print stands as a testament to one man's dedication to his country despite facing immense challenges on the battlefield.
