Portrait of General Count Alexey Arakcheyev, late 18th century. Artist: Russian Master

Portrait of General Count Alexey Arakcheyev, late 18th century. Arakcheyev (1769-1834) rose rapidly in the Russian Army in the 1790s. After the coronation of Tsar Paul I in 1796 he was appointed commandant of the St Petersburg garrison, but was later disgraced and stripped of his functions for covering up misdeeds by army officers. He was rehabilitated in 1803 by the new tsar, Alexander I, who appointed him Inspector of the Artillery. He introduced major reforms to Russian artillery, particularly after it performed badly at the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805. Found in the collection of the Far Eastern Art Museum, Khabarovsk, Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait print showcases General Count Alexey Arakcheyev, a prominent figure in late 18th-century Russia. Painted by an anonymous Russian master, this artwork captures the essence of Arakcheyev's commanding presence and military prowess. Born in 1769, Arakcheyev swiftly climbed the ranks of the Russian Army during the 1790s. Following Tsar Paul I's coronation in 1796, he assumed the role of commandant for the St Petersburg garrison. However, his reputation suffered a blow when he was implicated in covering up misconduct by fellow army officers. Consequently, he was stripped of his duties and faced disgrace. In a remarkable turn of events, Alexander I ascended to power in 1803 and rehabilitated Arakcheyev's name. The new tsar appointed him as Inspector of Artillery due to his expertise and knowledge. This position allowed Arakcheyev to implement significant reforms within Russian artillery after its disappointing performance at the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805. The painting is currently housed at the Far Eastern Art Museum located in Khabarovsk, Russia. It serves as a testament to both Arakcheyev's influential role within military circles and his dedication towards revolutionizing Russian artillery tactics. With meticulous attention to detail and vibrant colors that bring life to every brushstroke, this portrait immortalizes General Count Alexey Arakcheyev as an emblematic figure from Russia's rich history.
