Portrait of Napoleone Elisa Baciocchi, Niece of Napoleon I, 1810-1812. Creator

Portrait of Napoleone Elisa Baciocchi, Niece of Napoleon I, 1810-1812. To extend power across the continent, Napoleon arranged for his sisters to marry into the courts of Europe. The sitter is his niece, daughter of the Grand-Duke of Tuscany (the bee on her cup is a Napoleonic emblem). While the girls nakedness might startle us today, in the early 1800s depicting children nude emphasized their purity and innocence. The work takes its cues from ancient sculpture, and while the pet dog adds a note of tenderness, it also refers to Diana, goddess of the moon and hunt

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Portrait of Napoleone Elisa Baciocchi, Niece of Napoleon I" created between 1810 and 1812. In his quest to expand his influence across Europe, Napoleon strategically arranged marriages for his sisters into various royal courts. This particular portrait depicts his niece, who is the daughter of the Grand-Duke of Tuscany. Noticeably, a bee emblem on her cup symbolizes Napoleonic power. While it may surprise modern viewers, during the early 1800s, depicting children in a state of undress was intended to emphasize their purity and innocence. Inspired by ancient sculpture techniques, this work exudes classical influences. The inclusion of a pet dog adds both tenderness and alludes to Diana, the goddess associated with the moon and hunting. Created by Italian artist Lorenzo Bartolini (1777-1850), this marble sculpture captures an exquisite level of detail that brings Napoleone Elisa Baciocchi's likeness to life. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art as part of their heritage collection from Heritage Art/Heritage Images (not affiliated with any commercial use), this print offers us a glimpse into history through artistry that has stood the test of time.
