Tobias and the Angel, 1750s. Creator: Francesco Guardi (Italian, 1712-1793)
Tobias and the Angel, 1750s. This series of paintings predominantly tells the Old Testament story of Abraham and Isaac, and each of the canvases treats the interaction of humans and angels. In three works, angels appear to Abraham and, in one particularly dramatic canvas, an angel intercepts Abraham before he sacrifices his own son. However, the narrative of Tobias and the Angel comes from an entirely different book of the Bible. The blind Tobit sends his son Tobias off to collect a sum of money in the distant town of Media, with the angel Raphael accompanying him in disguise as a human. This particular work depicts Raphael overseeing Tobias catching a fish, which would later be used to cure his fathers blindness. Though the depiction the stories seems incongruous, the Sacrifice of Isaac and Tobias and the Angels were popular in Italian art between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries and both treat fathers and sons as well as obedience inspired by faith

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Francesco Guardi's masterpiece, "Tobias and the Angel" created in the 1750s. As part of a series of paintings depicting scenes from the Old Testament story of Abraham and Isaac, this particular canvas stands out for its portrayal of the interaction between humans and angels. While most of Guardi's works focus on angels appearing to Abraham, one can't help but be drawn to this dramatic depiction where an angel intercepts Abraham just as he is about to sacrifice his own son. However, what sets "Tobias and the Angel" apart is that it draws inspiration from an entirely different book of the Bible. In this painting, we witness Tobias accompanied by Raphael, disguised as a human. Tobias embarks on a journey to collect money in Media under his blind father Tobit's instructions. The scene captured here shows Raphael overseeing Tobias catching a fish that would later serve as a miraculous cure for his father's blindness. Although seemingly incongruous with the Sacrifice of Isaac narrative depicted in other works within Italian art during the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries, both stories share common themes such as fathers' love for their sons and obedience inspired by faith. This exquisite print allows us to appreciate Guardi's skillful brushwork while immersing ourselves in these timeless biblical tales brought to life through artistry.
