High-backed wooden side chair with an upholstered seat and back. The chair has early Baroque ball turned front legs and straight back legs. There is a carved scallop with feathered edges at the center of the front stretcher, the side stretchers are straight and there is no rear stretcher. The crest of the seat back has a carved late Baroque style shell design at the center and two inward-facing ears on each side of the crest rail. The upholstery on the seat covers the front, side, and rear seat rails. The fabric is velvet with a striped design in red, yellow, orange, green, brown, beige, and black. Mae Reeves (1912-2016) was a pioneering African-American milliner who was famous for her custom-made hats. Her business, Maes Millinery Shop in downtown Philadelphia, was one of the first shops in the city to be owned by a woman of African American heritage

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite piece of furniture - an upholstered side chair from Maes Millinery Shop, dating back to the years between 1900 and 1950. Crafted by an unknown creator, this high-backed wooden chair exudes elegance and charm. Its early Baroque ball turned front legs add a touch of sophistication, while the straight back legs provide stability. A standout feature of this chair is the intricately carved scallop with feathered edges at the center of the front stretcher. The crest of the seat back boasts a beautifully carved late Baroque style shell design, flanked by two inward-facing ears on each side of the crest rail. The upholstery on this remarkable piece covers not only the seat but also extends to enveloping the front, side, and rear seat rails. Made from luxurious velvet fabric with a striking striped pattern in shades of red, yellow, orange, green, brown, beige, and black; it adds a vibrant touch to any space. It's worth noting that Mae Reeves (1912-2016), a trailblazing African-American milliner renowned for her custom-made hats owned Maes Millinery Shop in downtown Philadelphia. This historic shop was one of the first establishments in Philadelphia owned by an African American woman. This photograph pays homage to both Mae Reeves' pioneering spirit and her exceptional taste in furniture design.
