EDITORS COMMENTS
Watercress Seller, c1880 captures a poignant moment in time, showcasing the stark contrast between privilege and poverty. In this evocative chromolithograph, we witness a young girl braving the harsh winter elements as she sells watercress on a desolate street corner. Clad in tattered rags and wrapped in a shawl for warmth, her fragile figure epitomizes the hardships faced by many during the 19th century. As snowflakes swirl around her, the girl's shivering form stands as a testament to resilience amidst adversity. Through an adjacent window pane, we glimpse a man observing her plight from within his cozy abode. The juxtaposition of their circumstances highlights societal disparities prevalent during that era. This image not only portrays the struggles of child labor but also serves as a reminder of England's impoverished past. The viewer is transported to an unforgiving world where survival often depended on such meager occupations. The monochromatic palette accentuates both the bleakness of winter and the destitution surrounding this young street trader. Yet amid her misery, there is an undeniable strength emanating from her determined gaze. Through this print by Unknown creator and courtesy of Ann Ronan Pictures, we are compelled to reflect upon our own privileges while acknowledging those who have endured unimaginable hardship throughout history.

Postcard of Surfer Riding a Wave. ca. 1908-1910, SURF RIDING, HAWAII. The most popular of Hawaiian pastimes is surf swimming or heenalu. In this sport the swimmers use a light board made of koa or wiliwili. With these they swim out to sea, diving under the rollers which they meet, until they reach the outer line of breakers: then, lying flat on their boards, they balance themselves upon the forward slope of the highest breaker, and ride with the speed of a race horse toward the shore. Surf board swimming can be seen at Waikiki near Honolulu
