Wreck of "The Vanguard"steamer, off Cork Lighthouse, 1844. Creator: Unknown
Wreck of " The Vanguard" steamer, off Cork Lighthouse, 1844. An iron-built steamer of the Dublin and Glasgow Steam Company ran aground on rocks off the Irish coast. There was bad weather and poor visibility:the vessel itself was wrapped in a mist, which made it almost impossible to discern the light, though the vessel was abreast of it. There was no loss of life:all the persons on board, between thirty and forty in number, were conveyed ashore.... From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol V

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the haunting scene of the wreck of "The Vanguard" steamer off Cork Lighthouse in 1844. The unknown creator skillfully depicts the dramatic incident that unfolded on that fateful day. In this 19th-century engraving, we witness the aftermath of a tragic accident as an iron-built steamer from the Dublin and Glasgow Steam Company finds itself stranded on treacherous rocks along the Irish coast. The weather was unforgiving, with bad conditions and poor visibility engulfing both ship and lighthouse in a thick mist. Despite these challenging circumstances, there was a silver lining amidst the chaos - all thirty to forty individuals aboard were successfully rescued and brought ashore unharmed. This remarkable feat is a testament to human resilience even in times of peril. The misty atmosphere surrounding this scene adds an eerie beauty to the landscape, emphasizing nature's power over man-made vessels. The image serves as a reminder of how unpredictable maritime journeys can be, highlighting both the dangers faced by sailors during this era and their ability to overcome adversity. Preserved within pages of "Illustrated London News" this historical artifact provides us with insight into transportation methods, press coverage, and Victorian society's fascination with such incidents. As we gaze upon this print today, it transports us back to another time when steamships ruled our waters but were still at mercy to Mother Nature's whims.
