EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of the Shrewsbury Empire Cinema, located in Mardol, Shrewsbury, Shropshire. The striking half-timbered Tudor Revival facade of this historic cinema is showcased from a southern perspective, exuding an air of grandeur and charm. Originally opened in 1922, the Empire Cinema holds significant historical importance as it is believed to be the first cinema in Shropshire to be equipped for sound. Over the years, it underwent various transformations and takeovers that shaped its identity. In 1973, a refurbishment breathed new life into the building. It was subsequently renamed Cannon Cinema in 1989 before becoming Virgin Cinema in 1995. Finally, it adopted the name ABC Cinema in 1996. Sadly, after serving as a beloved entertainment hub for decades, the curtains closed on this iconic venue in 1998. However, instead of fading into obscurity like so many other cinemas do when their final credits roll by permanently shutting down operations; this architectural gem found new purpose as it was transformed into a vibrant restaurant space. Norman Walley's expertly captured image showcases not only the rich history embedded within these walls but also serves as a testament to how buildings can adapt and evolve over time while still retaining their original allure. This photograph invites viewers to appreciate both its picturesque timber frame architecture and its cultural significance within Shrewsbury's cinematic landscape.
