Barbican construction and St Giles JLP01_09_740888
BARBICAN, CITY OF LONDON. A view towards Lauderdale Tower on Phase II of the Barbican development site, showing the Church of St Giles-without-Cripplegate and the old city wall alongside the lake in the foreground.
Phase II of the Barbican development consists of the area surrounding St Giles-without-Cripplegate Church and the Thomas More Gardens to the west of the site. The contract for Phase II was awarded to Turriff Limited, however delays and labour disputes halted progress in the construction. Turriff eventually withdrew from the contract, which was taken over by John Laing and Son Ltd

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of the Barbican construction and St Giles-without-Cripplegate Church in the heart of London's City. The image showcases Phase II of the Barbican development site, with Lauderdale Tower standing tall in the background. As your eyes wander through this historic scene, you can't help but notice the old city wall gracefully lining the foreground alongside a serene lake. Phase II of this ambitious project focused on revitalizing and transforming the area surrounding St Giles-without-Cripplegate Church and Thomas More Gardens to create a harmonious blend between modernity and tradition. However, challenges arose during construction as delays and labour disputes plagued progress. Eventually, Turriff Limited withdrew from their contract, leading John Laing and Son Ltd to step in and take over. The juxtaposition of architectural styles is striking; medieval Gothic elements intertwine with brutalist structures that dominate London's skyline. This photograph not only encapsulates a moment frozen in time but also serves as a reminder of how history seamlessly merges with contemporary urban landscapes. As we gaze upon this image captured by A© Historic England Archive, we are transported back to an era where craftsmanship was revered, walls held stories within them, and dreams were built brick by brick. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity while honoring our rich heritage – an everlasting tribute etched into pixels for generations to come.
