EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the vibrant atmosphere of the fish and poultry market at Bull Ring Centre in Birmingham during Christmas time. The bustling scene is filled with shoppers eagerly exploring the stalls, their faces adorned with excitement and anticipation. On a historical note, this retail market was officially opened on 14th November 1963 by the esteemed Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Alderman Dr. Louis Glass, JP. It replaced the old Market Hall building that had been standing since 1835 but unfortunately suffered severe damage from an air strike during World War II. The new market boasted a total of 154 stalls in its general section, while an additional 42 were dedicated to fish and poultry alone. This expansion allowed for a wider variety of products to be offered to customers, catering to their diverse needs. The photograph showcases not only the thriving commerce taking place within these market walls but also provides a glimpse into daily life during this era. It serves as a testament to the importance of markets as social hubs where people would gather not just for shopping but also for interaction and community engagement.
