EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of Sizewell B Nuclear Power Station on the Suffolk coast. Looking towards the reactor building, the foreground showcases three sections of steel liner for the dome, symbolizing progress and innovation in civil engineering. Sizewell B stands as one of two nuclear power stations in this coastal region, with its predecessor Sizewell A currently undergoing decommissioning. What makes Sizewell B unique is that it was the first Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) to be built in the United Kingdom. The main civil engineering work for this groundbreaking project was awarded to John Laing plc on May 19th, 1987. Over an impressive span of eight years, construction efforts culminated in the completion of Sizewell B in 1995. Operated by EDF Energy, this power station represents a pivotal milestone in harnessing nuclear energy for sustainable electricity generation. The image serves as a testament to human ingenuity and dedication towards creating cleaner sources of power during an era marked by advancements in technology and environmental consciousness. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this photograph offers us a glimpse into our past while reminding us of our ongoing pursuit for efficient and responsible energy solutions.
