Installing the spire JLP01_08_062418

COVENTRY CATHEDRAL, PRIORY STREET, COVENTRY. Laing workers on the roof of Coventry Cathedral bolting the 80ft bronze spire to a 1 yard square plate, with RAF officers standing in the background.
The people on the roof, including Royal Air Force staff and Laing staff were all part of Operation Rich Man. This involved a RAF Belvedere helicopter hoisting in to place the 80ft bronze spire on to the new cathedral. The part of the operation to lower the 1/2 ton cross that sits on top of the spire had to be postponed due to windy conditions

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of Coventry Cathedral. The image showcases Laing workers diligently installing the magnificent 80ft bronze spire onto a sturdy 1 yard square plate, while RAF officers observe from the background. This remarkable scene is part of Operation Rich Man, which involved a daring feat by RAF Belvedere helicopter to hoist and position the spire onto the cathedral. The dedication and precision displayed by both Royal Air Force personnel and Laing staff are evident as they work together on the roof of this iconic structure. Their collaborative efforts symbolize not only their commitment to completing this architectural masterpiece but also their contribution to preserving history. Unfortunately, adverse weather conditions forced a temporary postponement of lowering the 1/2 ton cross that crowns the spire into place. However, this setback did not dampen their spirits or deter them from accomplishing their mission. This photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance during an era when technology was limited compared to today's standards. It immortalizes an important chapter in Coventry's history, capturing both its resilience in rebuilding after World War II and its determination to create something extraordinary. As we gaze upon this image captured by A© Historic England Archive, we are reminded of the incredible feats achieved through collaboration, innovation, and unwavering dedication.
