EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the essence of Frederick V, a prominent figure in European history. Known as The Winter King, Frederick V was the Elector Palatine from 1610 to 1623 and briefly held the title of King of Bohemia from 1619 to 1620. In this portrait, he exudes an air of regality and strength. Married to Elizabeth, daughter of James I of Great Britain and VI of Scotland, Frederick V's decision to accept the throne of Protestant Bohemia would ultimately shape his destiny. However, his reign was short-lived as he faced defeat in November 1620 at the Battle of the White Mountain against Roman Catholic forces led by the Holy Roman Emperor. Following his defeat, Frederick V spent the rest of his life in exile. This lithograph after Van Dyck beautifully captures his noble features and serves as a reminder of a tumultuous period marked by religious conflict during the Thirty Years' War. Frederick V's story is one that intertwines politics, religion, and royalty. His legacy remains significant not only for German history but also for European history as a whole. As we gaze upon this print, we are transported back in time to witness a pivotal moment in which power dynamics shifted dramatically across Europe.
