Caesalpinia tortuosa, R
Watercolour on paper, no date (late 18th, early 19th century). Hand painted copy of an illustration commissioned by William Roxburgh (1751-1815). In his Flora Indica, Roxburgh describes this plant as a dreadfully armed species, native of Sumatra. It flowers in October and ripens the seed in February. Roxburgh also notes that Dr. Campbell, in 1796, sent some seeds of this species, from Sumatra, to the Botanic garden at Calcutta
