Fane's political ascent began in 1780 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Newport in Shropshire. He quickly gained a reputation as a capable and dedicated representative, and in 1784, he was appointed as a Lord of the Treasury. In 1793, Fane was appointed as the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, a position he held until 1801. During his tenure, he worked tirelessly to maintain order in the country, which was then experiencing significant political and social unrest. Fane's tenure as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland was marked by his commitment to reform and his efforts to improve the lives of the Irish people. He oversaw the implementation of several important reforms, including the establishment of the Irish Constabulary and the creation of the Irish Board of Works.
