EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th century colored engraving depicts the arrival of the Austrian troops in Naples during the tumultuous year of 1820. The liberal uprisings of July 1820, instigated by the secret society known as the Carbonari, had shaken the foundations of the Neapolitan monarchy. In response, the powers of the Holy Alliance, a political alliance of European states formed to suppress the Napoleonic threat and maintain the balance of power in Europe, intervened to quell the revolution. The engraving shows the Austrian soldiers, proudly advancing through the streets of Naples, acclaimed by the high society gentlemen and ladies who had gathered on balconies and in the streets to welcome them. The crowd below, a mix of Italians and foreigners, cheers and waves as the troops make their entry into the city. The soldiers, dressed in their uniforms and bearing their weapons, appear determined and resolute, ready to quench the flames of revolution. The scene is a poignant reminder of the tumultuous political climate of the time, as the Risorgimento, the Italian unification movement, began to take shape. The engraving also offers a glimpse into the contemporary social scene, with the elegant couples and well-dressed gentlemen and ladies watching the military procession with interest and excitement. The image is a testament to the complex web of political and social dynamics that characterized Europe in the 19th century.
