Alexis Blackbird Characters Chicken Chickens Cockerel Drama Eugene Fancy Guitry Plays Poultry Rooster Rostand Sidney Unusual Chantecler Nattier

EDITORS COMMENTS
In the enchanting world of Edmond Eugène Alexis Rostand's Chantecler, the third act unfolds with the eponymous hero, brilliantly portrayed by Lucien Guitry, standing proudly atop a hill overlooking his farm. Dressed in an extravagant, fancy costume designed by Nattier, Chantecler, a cockerel with an unusual sense of self-awareness, gazes out at the picturesque landscape with a sense of melancholy. The scene is set against the backdrop of the idyllic countryside, with Galipaux, the farmer, tending to his blackbird, Sidney, in the foreground. Leriche, the farmhand, looks on with a mixture of amusement and curiosity at the unusual behavior of the chickens, who are dressed in elaborate costumes for a poultry show. Chantecler, however, is preoccupied with more serious matters. He has heard a prophecy that the world will come to an end in three days, and he is determined to save his loved ones from the impending doom. With a heavy heart, he sets off on a quest to find the wise old hen, Pomme d'Or, who may hold the key to preventing the end of the world. Despite the whimsical and fantastical elements of the play, Rostand's masterful storytelling and Guitry's captivating performance bring depth and emotion to the character of Chantecler. This photograph, taken in 1910, captures a poignant moment in the third act, as the cockerel contemplates the weight of the world and the impending fate of his loved ones.
