Born in Denmark as Princess Alexandra of Denmark and Greece and Albania, she was the daughter of Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg and Princess Louise Rasmussen-Levetzau. Alexandra married Prince Edward, who would later become King Edward VII, in 1863. Their union brought an end to a long period of mourning in Britain following the death of Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, in 1861.
