1793 Alexandre Burney Fanny Frances Married Novelist Refugee Arblay

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: A Transatlantic Love Story: Alexandre D'Arblay, the French General and Fanny Burney, the English Novelist. This image portrays Alexandre D'Arblay, a French general and a refugee, who made history when he married the renowned English novelist, Frances Fanny Burney, in 1793. Born in 1728 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France, Alexandre D'Arblay rose through the ranks of the French military to become a respected general during the Seven Years' War. However, his life took an unexpected turn when the French Revolution broke out, forcing him to flee his homeland. In exile, D'Arblay found himself in England, where he made the acquaintance of Fanny Burney, an accomplished author known for her insightful novels and sharp wit. Their friendship quickly blossomed into a deep and passionate love, despite the significant differences in their backgrounds and the social norms of the time. Fanny, who was 27 years old at the time, defied her family's wishes and eloped with D'Arblay in 1793, much to the shock and disapproval of English society. The couple settled in France, where D'Arblay resumed his military career, and they lived happily together until his untimely death in 1814. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the extraordinary love story between Alexandre D'Arblay and Fanny Burney, which transcended the boundaries of nationality, social class, and convention. Their union serves as a testament to the power of love and the resilience of the human spirit, even in the most challenging of circumstances.
